Advantages of choosing the train on your trip to Machu Picchu

More than 75,000 people trek the 40-kilometer Inca Trail to the Inca city of Machu Picchu each year. The scenery is truly breathtaking, but it is not for the faint of heart; the altitude, steep climbs, extreme weather and camping deter many people from doing the Inca Trail. Only 6% of people entering Machu Picchu each day do so via the Inca Trail, so more than 85% of daily visitors to Machu Picchu choose to arrive by train; the final station is in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) the closest town to Machu Picchu.

You will arrive at Machu Picchu in less time

The main station for boarding trains to Machu Picchu is in the town of Ollantaytambo; it will take you two hours to reach Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu. What’s more, you can do your Cusco – Machu Picchu – Cusco tour in just one day. This will leave you time to see the main sites in Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

You will carry less luggage, that is always good.

You won’t need to carry a heavy 30-liter backpack on your back during your trip, nor would you be able to board the train with it; but we do mean that you won’t need tents, rain ponchos, portable stoves, energy bars, etc. Your headphones, a book, your camera, sun protection, water, and a few other things will suffice. The train ride to Machu Picchu allows you to not worry about anything other than just enjoying the trip, so create unforgettable memories.

You will have the level of comfort you desire

The train journey will not only allow you to sit comfortably, but you can choose the train, depending on the service you want on board. Put on your chosen music playlist to relax as you travel through the natural Andean landscape of the Sacred Valley. There are many train services, all of them high-end, choose one and read that book under the warm rays of the sun, make new friends from all over the world or just close your eyes and enjoy, you are about to reach the Inca city of Machu Picchu.

You can experience luxury trips to Machu Picchu

Train trips to Machu Picchu even allow for a completely luxurious travel experience. You can find the famous Hiram Bingham train and the First Class train from Inca Rail. Both trains offer services such as VIP reception at the train stations, lunch or gourmet menu during the trip, drinks and even entrance fees to Machu Picchu. Of course, you will have to book the luxury trains in advance.

How do I buy my entrance ticket to Machu Picchu?

  • When making your reservation you will need to enter your personal details.
  • It is recommended to write them down as they appear on your identification documents.
  • For added security or to access discounts for being a minor or university student, you will need to attach these credentials.
  • It is important that a person is in charge of the reservation with an email address that they have access to.
  • Each data you enter must be entered correctly. This information will be verified at the time of use.
  • Your train ticket reservations will arrive in your inbox and be ready to use.

How do I use my train tickets?

Once you have booked your train ticket for yourself and your companions, all that remains is to wait for the travel date and have everything ready to begin the adventure.

Another important factor is knowing what type of service you have purchased. This can be the bimodal service or the direct trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu Pueblo. In the bimodal service you travel by bus to the Ollantaytambo station and from this station you continue the journey by train to your destination.

To use train tickets you only need to follow the following recommendations:

  • You can print or show the QR code on your cell phone to validate your ticket credential.
  • It is at this point that the registered data and that of the identity document or passport are corroborated.
  • It is recommended to be at the train station 30 minutes before departure time.
  • If you have a direct service there will not be much of a problem.
  • In the bimodal service, you will have to change transport and look for the train you need to board.
  • There is usually a team of assistants who will help you locate the next service.
  • Try not to carry full backpacks or too many belongings. The route is easy to do and at most it only takes one day.
  • It is also important that you make a reservation for both the outbound and return journeys so that you can choose the times that best suit you.

How to enter Machu Picchu?

It would be unfair to talk to you about Machu Picchu and not tell you that you have to book tickets in advance, especially if you want the ticket that includes the Huayna Picchu mountain; this has to be booked several months in advance. But it is not enough to just get to Machu Picchu with tickets, you will also need to book train tickets, they sell out weeks in advance. During the high season (May – August) all reservations must be made months in advance.

Most trains to Machu Picchu depart from Ollantaytambo station, where you will board your train to Machu Picchu, provided you have booked tickets in advance. It is impossible to get tickets available at that time.

The best way to make your visit to Machu Picchu

One of the best strategies to get to Machu Picchu on time, whether you just want to be one of the first people, or if you book the Machu Picchu tickets that include the mountains in the first groups is; if possible, spend the night before your visit in Aguas Calientes and be one of the first people to enter Machu Picchu, the sunrise will seem magical to you and it is the closest you will get to being alone in Machu Picchu; however, people who enter Machu Picchu in the afternoon shift, can enjoy the sunset. The light at 4 pm is considered by many expert and amateur photographers, the best time to photograph Machu Picchu.

If you decide to go beyond Machu Picchu and climb one of its fabulous mountains – Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu – be aware that these tickets are very limited and that to access them you must book several months in advance.

Thousands of people board the train to Machu Picchu at the Ollantaytambo station every day. If you have already chosen your Machu Picchu ticket, choose your train, the Expedition, the Vistadome, the Hiram Bingham. If you don’t know which one to choose, please contact us by writing to [email protected].

The booking of train tickets

  • Many train services sell out weeks in advance, so the best time to book is immediately after booking your Machu Picchu tickets.
  • Also, keep in mind that if you book Machu Picchu tickets that include the mountains in the first groups, it is best to arrive in the town of Aguas Calientes one day before your visit.

  • It is not recommended to buy train tickets at the last minute, as there is a risk of not finding availability.

The only two train companies to Machu Picchu

  • There are two companies that provide train services to Machu Picchu: Peru Rail and Inca Rail.
  • Peru Rail is the oldest and offers different services at many times; and, depending on the service you choose, you can board your train at one of the different stations.
  • Its services are: local train (economical for Peruvians), Expedition train, Vistadome train, Vistadome Observatory train and Hiram Bingham luxury train.
  • Inca Rail is the other company that provides train service to Machu Picchu, and like the previous one, it has various services and schedules; from tourist class to the presidential service aboard the Inca princess.
  • Its services are: The Voyager train, The 360 train, The Premium & Lounge train, The First Class train and the luxury train The Private.

The train stations to Machu Picchu

  • Most services of both train companies will depart from Ollantaytambo station; however, some services will depart from alternative stations in the cities of Poroy or Cusco.
  • In the city of Cusco, Peru Rail has two stations: San Pedro Station and Wánchaq Station. Both stations, in addition to train departures, offer daily bus services to Ollantaytambo, known as bimodal services.
  • In the town of Poroy, located 15 kilometers (35 minutes from the city of Cusco), there is a train station. Some of the most luxurious services depart from there, such as the Hiram Bingham train.
  • The most frequent trains leave from Ollantaytambo station every day. That is why most tourists choose this station. From Cusco, Ollantaytambo is reached by road in an average of 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The Ollantaytambo station, the most used

  • The Ollantaytambo train station is the most used by tourists as it has the highest number of daily departures. The main services of both Peru Rail and Inca Rail depart from there.
  • Ollantaytambo is 61 kilometers from the city of Cusco. You can get there with a train ticket that includes a bus (Bimodal service) or with a public transport service.
  • You can reach the city of Ollantaytambo by taking buses, cars or minivans that leave from Pavitos Street in the historic center of the city of Cusco.
  • These vehicles charge around 12 soles and will take you in approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to the city of Ollantaytambo.
  • If you choose to travel on the Bimodal service of either Peru Rail or Inca Rail, you will need to go to their main stations in the city of Cusco. Peru Rail has its bus station in the town of Wánchaq. Inca Rail has its bus station on El Sol Avenue, one of the main avenues in the city of Cusco.

The train route on your own

  • If you decide to come to Machu Picchu on your own, remember to plan your time very carefully. The train schedule you choose must match the type of ticket to Machu Picchu you have chosen.
  • You need to be in Machu Picchu at 7am if you booked the tickets that include the mountains in the first group. If this is the case, we recommend booking the train tickets for a day in advance, and spending the night in the town of Aguas Calientes.
  • The final station for the trains to Machu Picchu is in the town of Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of the mountain where the Inca city is built. And just two blocks away is the bus station to Machu Picchu, which takes tourists to the gates of the Inca archaeological site in 30 minutes.
  • That is to say, to organize the trip to Machu Picchu on your own you need to buy up to three tickets: the entrance to Machu Picchu, the train ticket and the final bus ticket to the Inca city.

Cancellation of train ticket

  • If you want to cancel your train tickets, do so at least 30 days in advance. The closer the day of your trip, the higher the cancellation penalty will be. And if you do not do it in time, you will lose your train tickets.
  • The train ticket is non-transferable and cannot be changed once purchased. Only in cases of emergency such as natural disasters or social protests, flexibility can be granted for cancellation or change of date of the train trip.
  • Cancellation is only possible by the ticket holder. The penalty for cancellation is 10% of the ticket value (for administrative costs). A ticket cannot be cancelled within twenty-four hours before the train journey.
  • If you made the purchase through a travel agency, you must coordinate the cancellation of the ticket with them.

The train journey in a wheelchair

  • Travelling by train for a wheelchair user is possible. Tourists must indicate their travel needs in their reservation. Visitors in wheelchairs are assigned a special seat in the carriage.
  • However, to be honest, trains are not designed to provide space and comfort for a visitor in a wheelchair. Although there are no ramps for access to the trains, the tourist assistance staff will provide you with the necessary support to access the train.
  • After the train ride, you will have to board the buses that will take you to Machu Picchu. These buses also do not have ramps or spaces inside for people in wheelchairs. However, the bus staff will provide you with the necessary support for this task.
  • Once in Machu Picchu, there is a special route for wheelchair users. This includes the entrance to a special viewing point where you can contemplate the splendid landscape of Machu Picchu and its main Inca buildings.

This is what it’s like to visit Machu Picchu in a wheelchair

Lateness or absences on the train trip to Machu Picchu

  • In case of delay or failure to travel by train, there is no refund. The train departs punctually on the day and at the time shown on the ticket.
  • In case of illness, an exception can be made by sending a doctor’s note as soon as possible. Even better, if it is sent before the trip.
  • Events such as strikes, natural disasters and others beyond the control of the company may cause delays or cancellation of the service if it is believed that your safety and that of the rest of the group is at risk.
  • You can change the date of your train ticket up to 24 hours before your trip; after this time there is no possibility of cancellation or change of any kind.

The trip to Machu Picchu without a train

  • Travelling by train is not the only way to visit Machu Picchu. There are also two other routes: the 4-day Inca Trail hiking route or the alternative route via the Hydroelectric Station in the Cusco jungle.
  • The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a 4-day hiking route in its classic version (there is also a short version of only 2 days). This route is through the historic Inca roads, the qhapac ñan. Therefore, it can only be done through a tour organized by a tourism agency, which provides the necessary permits.
  • The alternative route via Hidroeléctrica allows you to travel to the town of Aguas Calientes through the Cusco jungle, via the Hidroeléctrica train station, located 10 kilometers from Machu Picchu town. The first bus ride from the city of Cusco takes between 5 and 6 hours. Then, there is a 2-hour walk to reach Aguas Calientes.
  • The 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a tour that costs approximately $500 per visitor. The Hidroeléctrica route, on the other hand, is considered the most economical route to Machu Picchu.

When planning the trip to Machu Picchu, if there is something as important as the entrance tickets, it is the train tickets, because unless you are planning to enter Machu Picchu by the Inca Trail or by the Hidroelectrica route, you will also have to book the train tickets in advance. Otherwise you may have to go to the Inca city through the Hidroelectric route, which includes 6 hours of travel and 2 more hours of walking to reach the town of Aguas Calientes. Train tickets have limited availability. And the best way to make your visit is to buy your ticket one or two months in advance. The purchase can be made on the websites of Peru Rail and Inca Rail. You can also make the purchase in person in the city of Cusco. However, you run the risk of not finding availability.

The train trip from Cusco city to Machu Picchu

The trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu can be done in three ways. The first, the most preferred by visitors, is with the train trip from the various stations, such as Ollantaytambo (the most used by tourists).

The second option is the adventurous route through the Hidroeléctrica station. This route consists of two stages. The first is a trip in a tourist minivan from Cusco to Hidroeléctrica passing through the jungle of Cusco (5 hours trip on average). The second part is a two-hour hike from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu village).

The third option is with the 4-day Inca Trail tour. This trekking route, one of the best in the world, covers 39 kilometers on foot, a part of the immense Inca network of the qhapac ñan (royal Inca roads). The final destination is Machu Picchu as the Incas did it, passing through the Intipunku, the Sun Gate.

Of the three options, most visitors prefer to travel by train because it offers a faster trip, a safer route, a comfortable experience and shows such as dance performances. Some trains even offer a gourmet menu and music show on board.

To make the trip by train you must choose between two types of train companies: Peru Rail or Inca Rail. Both complete the trip to Machu Picchu by minivan (Cusco – Ollantaytambo route) and train (Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes). In all cases, after arriving at the town of Aguas Calientes, you must take a bus that in 30 minutes takes the visitor to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu.

“Incredible“

“One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life. I went up the Machu Picchu mountain because I didn't manage to book the tickets to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain. I like this mountain, it is higher than Huayna Picchu mountain but easier to climb, and you can take nice pictures of it. I was so amazed with Machu Picchu, that I returned home with several books about Machu Picchu and the Inca culture.“

“What can I say about Machu Picchu?“

“The queues are long, tickets have to be booked in advance, there are many people, the bus is expensive; But when I passed the door, I came to the place I dreamed of as a child, it's incredible, it was one of the best days of my life; We climbed by bus and walked down, are about 10,000 steps (exaggeration) but the experience is incomparable, the views, the city, the mountains and the incredible buildings; I recommend bringing a good camera, the opportunities for the photographs are endless; But being there is worth the time, the tired money and everything. It's all I have to say about Machu Picchu.“

Machu Picchu

“Definitely deserves the title of marvel“

“There is no camera or image that can capture all the majesty of this place. I suggest going up as early as possible. It's an hour's walk from the village to the entrance to the national park, but once there, you'll know it was worth it. The train ride is wonderful, but the Inca city is indescribably definitely worth the world title of wonder.“
