Advice from people who have been there

Machu Picchu

Lucy B.By: Lucy B.

“Book train tickets as soon as possible“

“I was in Machu Picchu a few days ago, it was fabulous, but we had a problem, we already had Machu Picchu tickets, but we could not book train tickets on time (we forgot), even though it was not high season; We had to enter Machu Picchu through an alternate route through a town called Santa María. So if you are reading this; I would not risk it again. Buy the train tickets in advance or book the trip to Machu Picchu with an agency, it costs a little more, but you will be sure that you will be able to enter Machu Picchu.“

You are looking to learn about every detail, vestige and peculiarity of the Incas. The best option is to take a tour inside the Inca citadel. Other recommendations

  • The tour organization requires that Machu tickets must be booked in advance; however, if you want to have the summit of Huayna Picchu in your Machu Picchu experience, then you will have to book the ticket weeks in advance. If you want to come during the high season (June, July, August) then we recommend booking months in advance, otherwise you may not be able to choose from all the available tickets.
  • In no case should you look for a path on your own or cross the security lines. Machu Picchu was designed to be inaccessible, so looking for a path on your own is a big mistake, which could cause damage to your safety, and even worse if you do it while hiking on the Huayna Picchu mountain.
  • Many choose the dry season to come to Machu Picchu, but Machu Picchu is just as impressive in the sun as it is in the rain. In fact, the rainy season offers some of the most exuberant landscapes in Machu Picchu, and allows you to explore the Inca city as much as possible on your own. And that’s pretty much more than you can ask for in a place like Machu Picchu.
  • When you come to Machu Picchu you should be prepared for rain; the area can go from bright sunshine to torrential rain in just a few minutes, so bring waterproof clothing no matter what time of year you come. Also protect your skin from the sun and insects.
  • You can choose to take one of the buses to go up from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, but you can also do it on foot. Or mix it up, get on the bus and walk back down; however, if you are going to tour any of the mountains of Machu Picchu, we recommend taking the bus, as you don’t want to be tired in Machu Picchu.

“The ruins of the world“

“Machu Picchu is one of the best places in the world, it is impossible not to be overwhelmed by such a display of grandeur, especially because of the place they chose for it. In reality, it should matter very little what time of year you come, whether the weather is good or not, if you have the opportunity to come to Machu Picchu, do it, it is an essential trip. The rest of Peru is also very beautiful, its food is great, but there is nothing like Machu Picchu.“

June is the month of Inti Raymi in Cusco, Peru
Every June 24, the city of Cusco receives thousands of visitors from all over the world. On that day the famous festival of Inti Raymi is celebrated, a cultural and religious event where the people of Cusco pay homage to their Inca ancestors. On that day, three big shows are performed where the Inca festivity of the Wawa Inti Raymi, suppressed by the Spaniards in the XVI century, is interpreted. The first and second shows take place in the Coricancha and the Plaza de Armas and are free for the public. The main show, in Sacsayhuaman, is private with the purchase of a ticket to one of the seats around the stage. The Inti Raymi is a world-famous event. The entrance ticket must be purchased two to three months in advance. On those days it is highly recommended to visit Machu Picchu, a must-see destination on the trip.

Machu Picchu, an incredible year-round destination

Machu Picchu is one of the best destinations in the world. Every year the Inca city receives awards in countless contests worldwide, as one of the best tourist attractions on the planet.

The Inca archaeological site is open every day of the year from 6 am to 5 pm. It is even open on holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Day, Sundays, etc. The only days when the Inca llaqta can close is during protests or emergencies (as happened in 2020 during the pandemic).

All months are ideal to visit Machu Picchu. January, February, and March are the rainiest months, which can make it difficult to hike or tour the archaeological site. However, if the day is favorable, you can appreciate a greener and more beautiful landscape. From May to August there are few cases of rain, which facilitates walks and outdoor excursions. However, all year round the Inca city is open and ready to offer a great experience to the traveler.

June is considered the best and most special month to visit Machu Picchu. The reason? There is very little chance of rain during the day (although the nights are colder) and important festivities are celebrated in the city of Cusco such as Inti Raymi or Corpus Christi. That is why June is called the jubilee month of Cusco.

Machu Picchu in June, festivities and adventure

In June during the trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu the tourist can enjoy:

  • Trekking routes to Machu Picchu – There are several trekking routes to Machu Picchu, such as: the Inca Trail 4 days (considered one of the best in the world), the Salkantay trek 5 days, the Lares trek 4 days, the Huchuy Qosqo 3 days, the Inca Jungle 4 days and more. All these routes can be done all year round, although in June there are many more tourists who visit them. It is that in those days there is less chance of rain which facilitates outdoor excursions.
  • The route by Hydroelectric – The route by Hydroelectric is the most economical way to get to Machu Picchu. It is a 5 hour bus ride through the high mountains and jungle of the region starting from the city of Cusco. The final stretch is a 10 kilometers (2 hours) hike to the town of Aguas Calientes to finally reach Machu Picchu by bus (30′ minutes) or on foot (2 hours more). In January, February and March, the rains are dangerous for the traveler. Therefore, June is the right month to make this adventurous route to Machu Picchu.
  • The Inti Raymi – Every June 24 the city of Cusco returns to live in the time of the Incas through three great stagings in the Coricancha, the Plaza de Armas and Sacsayhuaman, three sites with a lot of history since Inca times. That day is a holiday throughout the city, the locals celebrate with music, typical dishes and much joy. It is the best display of culture in Cusco.
  • Corpus Christi – Corpus Christi is celebrated in the city of Cusco nine weeks after the Catholic Holy Thursday. That means that on a Thursday in June, the city of Cusco is full of parishioners carrying in procession up to fifteen images of saints from the main churches of the city. It is a sample of symbiosis between the western and native faith in Cusco.

“Machu Picchu in a wheelchair“

“I am disabled and I would like to tell all the people who, like me, travel with a wheelchair and a companion, that they can do this trip; they can board a train and enter Machu Picchu with their wheelchair. When I did, a couple of young people offered to help me with my wheelchair, and they did; but I met many people who would have also been delighted to do it; I was able to see all of Machu Picchu, I even reached one of the highest places known as the guardian's house, from where I could see all the wonder. If you want it is possible; cheer up.“

Fewer people – For many visitors, the low tourist season is the best time to visit Machu Picchu as there are far fewer tourists touring the site compared to the high tourist season.

Prices are lower – The low season offers the Machu Picchu travel experience at the best prices. On the contrary, in high season prices tend to increase due to the high demand of tourists.

Lush landscapes – The rains make Machu Picchu look even greener and this is really beautiful in the Amazonian jungle where it is located. The most beautiful days are those which combine rain with radiant sunshine.

Warmer weather – During the low season it may rain often. However, the weather is still warm. The tourist can be in the rain (with a rain poncho) but feel a pleasant warmth.

Inca Trail closed – The Inca Trail remains closed in February due to constant rains and maintenance work on this trekking route. The rest of the year, the Inca Trail is open to the public.

Slippery trails – Due to rainfall, the trails of the Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains often become slippery during the low or regular season. If you do any of these treks, you should wear non-slip hiking shoes.

Fewer tickets – After the new changes made by the Ministry of Culture. During the low or regular season there will be only 6 types of tickets or routes to enter Machu Picchu.
