Is Machu Picchu mountain the same as Huayna Picchu mountain?
Machu Picchu Mountain is not the same as Huayna Picchu. This summit is located south of the citadel of Machu Picchu, just in front of the Waynapicchu. It is the great mountain on which was built the sacred city of the Incas, and precisely because of it, Machu Picchu owes its name. It rises to more than 3,082 meters of altitude being a higher mountain and with an even better view than Huayna Picchu. The entrance to both the mountain and Huayna Picchu is allowed only for visitors over 18 years old.

What is the highest mountain in Machu Picchu?

  • The Machu Picchu mountain is the highest of the four peaks that surround the Inca city. It is located 3,082 meters above sea level. The other three summits are Huchuy Picchu (2,497 meters above sea level), Huayna Picchu (2,720 meters above sea level) and Putucusi (2,560 meters above sea level). The latter is not open for tourist visits.
  • From the top of the mountain you have a panoramic view, the most complete of the archaeological site, of the mountain range and the beautiful high jungle geography that surrounds Machu Picchu. However, it is not necessary to get to the top to have this view. From its various viewpoints on the slopes of the mountain you can get these views.
  • The hike to the Machu Picchu mountain is arduous. It is estimated that it is 2.5 kilometers uphill through stone staircases made by the Incas and steep trails, always ascending (it is estimated to climb about 600 meters from the archaeological site).
  • Machu Picchu belongs to the mountain chain known as the Vilcabamba range, where high mountains like the snow-capped Salkantay, the second highest in Cusco with a height of 6,271 meters, stand out. At certain times of the year, from the top of the Machupicchu mountain, you can see part of the immense Salkantay.

What is the experience of visiting Machu Picchu mountain like?

  • Climbing to the top of the Machu Picchu mountain is a challenging experience but full of adventure and beautiful memories.
  • First you must get to Machu Picchu. At the entrance gate you must show the ticket ‘Machu Picchu + Mountain’, which allows access to this summit and the route through the archaeological site through circuit 1.
  • After the entrance you climb stone stairs for 15 to 30 minutes until you reach the famous Casa del Guardián, also known as Casa del Vigilante. There you have a classic view of the citadel, so tourists get their classic picture of Machu Picchu.
  • After spending some time taking nice pictures, we return to the sector of Inca roads (qhapac ñan) to take the detour of stone stairs, which leads to the entrance gate of the Machu Picchu mountain. There you must show your ticket, register the time of access and begin the adventure to the top of Machu Picchu.
  • The hike up the Machu Picchu mountain is 2.5 kilometers on average. You ascend through viewpoints on the slopes of the mountains. From there you can get beautiful photos and panoramic views of the archaeological site, so it is not necessary to reach the top.
  • However, if you continue on the route, the visitor will have to negotiate stone stairs and trails, all built by the Incas themselves more than 500 years ago. You can hear the birds singing and, if you are lucky, you may spot some mammals along the route. The truth is that an average visitor can complete the route in 2 hours or a little more.
  • Once at the top, the tourist will be about 600 meters higher than the Guardian’s House in Machu Picchu. At that altitude, from 3,082 meters above sea level, you have a full view of the beautiful geography surrounding Machu Picchu.
  • However, at some times of the year the site is covered with clouds making it difficult to get a picture or fully enjoy the scenery. The rainiest and most foggy months are January, February and March.
  • After the visit to the Machu Picchu mountain, it is time to return to the Inca citadel. The way back is the same as the way out, only downhill. For many it is easier, but you must be careful not to stumble on the steps. On average, the descent takes 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • In summary, if you want to see Machu Picchu from the top, this is your best alternative, the Machu Picchu mountain allows you to make a spectacular hike along its trails, which, unlike the Huayna Picchu, are wide and with gentler slopes. This tour can be done by everyone, and from which you can get the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, it is even possible to see the nearby snow-capped mountains.
  • However, for security reasons, only visitors over 18 years of age are allowed to enter the mountain.

The hike to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain
The most intense trekking route inside Machu Picchu is the hike to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain. The archaeological site is located at 2,430 meters above sea level while the top of the mountain is at 3,082 meters above sea level. The trekking route is approximately 2.5 kilometers long. The route is through trails and stone stairways built by the Incas. The route takes 2 hours or a little more, depending on the physical capacity of each visitor. The route is suitable for all people, whether they are children or older adults. Along the way there are viewpoints with beautiful views of Machu Picchu, so it is not necessary to reach the top to have spectacular views. The entrance is with the ticket ‘Machupicchu + Mountain’.

The challenging hike to Machu Picchu Mountain

  • The Machu Picchu Mountain is the summit that gave its name to the Inca Citadel. It is 3,082 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), almost 600 meters above the archaeological site, which is located on its slopes. There are ancient Inca trails more than 600 years old that lead to the summit, a place of worship to the ‘Apus’ or spirits of the mountains. According to Andean cosmology, the summits were gods that protected men. The Machu Picchu Mountain was one of the protective entities of the Incas.
  • The ascent to the top of this mountain is a challenge for the visitor. It is estimated that the journey is approximately 2 kilometers on trails with slopes of up to 30°. The roads are made of stone and dirt with few flat stretches. It is estimated that the climb takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the physical condition of the tourist. The route is considered of medium to moderate difficulty. The danger is almost nonexistent. Although the trails are on the edge of cliffs, they are wide and well marked.

The flora and fauna surrounding Machu Picchu Mountain

  • Along the way to the top of the Machu Picchu Mountain, you can appreciate a great variety of flora and fauna in their natural habitat. In 2012, the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary was chosen as the world’s top Green Tourism Destination.
  • It is estimated that in the area there are more than 200 species of orchids, beautifully pigmented flowering plants. In addition, there are estimated to be more than 700 types of butterflies and 400 kinds of birds. Much of this varied nature is found in the mountains.
  • The vizcacha is one of the animals that inhabit the Machu Picchu Mountain. These rodents of the Andes hide in the rocks appearing in the early hours to warm up with the first rays of the sun.
  • It is also possible to see several species of lizards, including a recently discovered one called “the Andean lizard of Machu Picchu”. If you are luckier, it is possible to see a spectacled bear, an endangered species that roams the summits of the Wonder of the World.

At the top of Machu Picchu

  • Once at the top, the visitor will be at the highest point of the Wonder of the World. From there you have a privileged view of the Inca citadel, the Vilcanota River, the Huayna Picchu, the Putucusi mountain, the town of Aguas Calientes, the flora and fauna of the area and all under a splendid sky.
  • However, it is not necessary to reach the top to appreciate all the scenic beauty of the place. Along the way up, you can already enjoy the panorama from a privileged point of view.
  • At the top of the mountain, the visitor will find himself at 3,082 meters above sea level. From this point you can get the best pictures of Machu Picchu. Either with the Inca citadel in the background or with the greenery of the other mountain peaks behind.
  • The most beautiful photos are taken at the top of this summit. It is important not to get too close to the cliffs or look for unmarked trails in an effort to find an unusual photo. It is advisable to respect the mountain and nature from this point.

The best pictures of Machu Picchu Mountain

  • The incredible views from the top, the rich diversity of flora and fauna and the challenging ascent to the top make Machu Picchu Mountain one of the most propitious places to take the best pictures of the Wonder of the World.
  • The tour begins at the so-called ‘Cada del Guardián’ from where the classic postcard photo of the Inca citadel is taken.
  • Already at the top, the archaeological site looks small. This is the moment for a photo for posterity.
  • Along the way, if you are lucky, you can photograph viscachas, butterflies, birds, lizards or even a spectacled bear.
  • The classic shot at the top of the mountain is next to the sign indicating the 3,082 meter height at the summit.
  • The great diversity of orchids is also a great option to achieve the best image. In Inca times, this mountain had a religious importance, just as it is now for visitors looking to get the best image of their dream trip.

Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, is undoubtedly a great attraction that all visitors want to know about. This famous archaeological site not only draws attention not only to its archaeological remains but also to the nature that surrounds it. It is built between two mountains, which are part of the attractions that can be visited and climbed. The Huayna Picchu mountain is the one that appears in all the classic photos and, right in front of it, is the great Machu Picchu mountain. Learn more about this summit!

Which one to choose: Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu mountain?
Machu Picchu Mountain is the highest peak surrounding Machu Picchu in Cusco, Peru. Its summit is at 3,082 meters above sea level. From there, you have panoramic views of the Inca citadel and all the beautiful surrounding geography. The Huayna Picchu mountain is another summit, located around Machupicchu and at 2,693 meters above sea level. Both routes are challenging but with beautiful views and lots of adventure. Huayna Picchu is only suitable for people over 12 years old. The Machu Picchu mountain is suitable for visitors of all ages. Which is better? This depends on the taste of each visitor. The Huayna is more intense but shorter. The mountain is longer but with more rest.

The old mountain that gave Machu Picchu its name

  • Machu Picchu is a Quechua word that translates as “old mountain”.
  • The Inca city owes its present name to this mountain. However, according to some research, the real name of Machu Picchu would be Patallaqta.
  • This magnificent mountain is part of the eastern slope of the Central Andean Cordillera and is surrounded by the Urubamba River. Its elevation is about 3082 meters above sea level.
  • On one of its slopes was built the road that Hiram Bingham, linking the town of Aguas Calientes with the Inca city, on the back is the final route of the Inca Trail.
  • And in one of its promontories, the one that unites it with the Huayna Picchu mountain, the Inca city of Machu Picchu was built.
  • And it seems that this mountain was not chosen at random, from its location you have dominion over the surrounding landscape and the unique way in which it is attached to the “young mountain” (Waynapicchu mountain) made it a perfect place for the claims that had their Inca builders.
  • Surrounded by abundant vegetation, typical of the jungle, Machu Picchu Mountain rises impressively in the middle of the Andes and the cloud forest.

Machu Picchu Mountain: an adventure you won’t forget

  • The hike up Machu Picchu Mountain is one of the best experiences you can have in Machu Picchu.
  • The climb takes place between trails that open between the lush flora of the place and that are combined with more than 1600 stone steps.
  • The trail is more gentle in its slope compared to Waynapicchu, but it takes a little longer to reach its summit. During the hike, you can stop to rest in several of the viewpoints that there are and that have conditioned sheds.
  • As you climb, the views get more and more incredible. Getting to the top can be exhausting, partly due to the altitude, but the reward will be sublime when you are at the summit.
  • Many people who have experienced the experience will tell you that there is no better view of the sanctuary than from here.
  • Machu Picchu and its surroundings will give you the best view you can have of this sacred place of the Incas.

The trip to the Wonder of the World allows you to enjoy one of the most incredible natural landscapes in the world. It also offers a tour of the mysterious Inca constructions of more than 600 years ago. But that’s not all, it is also possible to do two hiking trails considered among the best on the planet. It is about the treks to the peaks of the Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains. Both promise to see the Inca citadel from the top. Which of the two to choose? Learn a little more about each of these experiences in the Inca llaqta and be encouraged to live the trip of your life.

Lower part of Machu Picchu - Route to Huayna Picchu mountain
Lower part of Machu Picchu – Route to Huayna Picchu mountain

What are the mountains of Machu Picchu?

  • By orders of Pachacutec, the Incas built an urban, religious and resting place for the emperor and his family in approximately 1450.
  • This important building was made as high as possible on a slope of the Machu Picchu mountain and at the foot of Huayna Picchu, another lower summit. In this last mountain there is also a small peak called ‘Huchuy Picchu’ ( Small mountain). In the distance you can also see the top of the imposing Putucusi mountain.
  • The result was the Wonder of the World, an enclosure that harmonizes with the nature around it. Many things have changed since then.
  • Now, the site is one of the largest tourist spots on the planet. However, the two peaks where the Inca llaqta was raised remain firm: the Machu Picchu mountain and the Huayna Picchu.
  • Currently, these two mountains offer incredible adventures for the visitor.

Huayna Picchu, the young mountain

  • Huayna Picchu, translated from the Quechua language, means ‘young mountain’. This is due to its smaller size compared to the imposing Machu Picchu mountain.
  • It is located north of the Inca citadel, at 2,720 meters above sea level. On the slopes of the mountain you can find the Temple of the Moon, right between two natural caverns. To get there you have to go down a path of stairs and trail.
  • The Temple of the Moon is also known as the Great Cavern. According to some studies it would have a strong relationship with fertility.
  • After the changes of 2024, it is now possible to visit the Temple of the Moon during the high season (from June 1 to October 15), for which you must book the ticket “Machu Picchu + Temple of the Moon”.
  • You can also find amazing constructions near the top of the mountain. There are the famous stairways of death.

Do I need hiking shoes to do the hikes?
It is not really necessary to have hiking shoes to do these hikes. However, you will need to have sneakers or shoes that are comfortable both for traction and for the flexibility of the feet. That is to say, it must be comfortable, and it will be important that the footwear is resistant to avoid accidents or injuries. It is also recommended to dress comfortably to make the routes without any problems or inconveniences.

Machupicchu, the old mountain

  • Machu Picchu comes from a Quechua word that means ‘old mountain’. This may be due to its greater dimension to the Waynapicchu (young mountain).
  • It is located in the upper part of the Inca citadel, at 3,082 meters above sea level
  • Inca trails were erected on its slopes in order to reach the top and worship the Andean gods such as the hills, the sun, etc.
  • Although no Inca temple was built on its roads, the great elevation of this summit made it one of the most important ‘apus’ that surround the Wonder of the World.
  • Today, the steep trails that lead to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain are one of the most adventurous new tourist attractions in the Inca llaqta.
  • This hiking route covers almost 2 kilometers of steep Inca roads from where you can appreciate all the beauty of the geography that surrounds the Inca citadel.
  • Unlike Waynapicchu, the paths are wider and safer. Getting to the top and back takes an average of 3 or 4 hours depending on the physical condition of the person.

What adventure to choose?

  • Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain offer different experiences in the Wonder of the World.
  • The hike to Huayna Picchu is shorter, but by a steeper route. It requires more effort and is only valid for people over 18 years old.
  • The ascent to Machu Picchu Mountain is easier to do. However, only tourists over 18 years old can do the route. In addition, it allows to see Machu Picchu from the highest point of the place.

Here are the characteristics of each mountain.

Why choose Huayna Picchu?

  • Because the adrenaline rush is unlike any other hike. At the top the effort will be rewarded with a full view of the Wonder of the World. During the tour you can see part of Machu Picchu. Also, you will see part of the Inca Trail or Qhapac Ñam.

  • The ascent to the Machu Picchu and Waynapicchu mountains is not a race for who comes first. Walk at your own pace. There is enough time to complete the tour.
  • During the rainy season (November to March) mountain trails tend to get wet. It is recommended to wear suitable shoes or shoes for hiking.
  • In both cases it is only allowed to carry a backpack with no more than 5 kilos of weight. Take only the most important things: sunscreen, water, sunglasses, hat or hat, rain poncho, camera and some snacks.

Do you want to travel to Machu Picchu but are looking for some adventure? This trip offers various options for adventurous spirits. The Inca Trail and the ascent through the Huayna Picchu are perhaps the most popular hikes you can find. This route offers one of the best views of the place. How difficult is the climb to the top of this summit? Know everything you have to know about this incredible tourist attraction.

This is the Machu Picchu mountain

Machu Picchu mountain is the highest peak surrounding the famous Inca city. To get there you must make an arduous uphill hike of about 2 kilometers, and once at the top you will be at the highest point of Machu Picchu!

What is the Machu Picchu mountain?

  • Machupicchu is not the same as Machu Picchu mountain. The first refers to the Inca citadel, which was made known to the world by the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. The second is the upper mountainous elevation.
  • Therefore this mountain is the summit located at the top of the archaeological site and whose name: Machu ‘mountain’ and Picchu ‘old’ adopted the archaeological site to be known worldwide.
  • Currently, the ancient Inca roads were conditioned to be traveled by tourists. From the top of the summit you can glimpse all the amazing geography of the place: the archaeological site, the Huaynapicchu, the Putucusi, the Vilcanota river and more.
  • The tour of the Machupicchu mountain has become one of the main tourist attractions. To enter you need to buy the ticket ‘Machu Picchu + Mountain’.
Difficulty climbing the Machu Picchu Mountain

Where is?

  • This mountain is part of the so-called ‘Salkantay massif’. It is located south of the Inca city of Machupicchu, just in front of the Huaynapicchu . The top of the mountain is 3,082 meters above sea level (10,111 ft).
  • The entrance to this mountain is in a detour that follows the route of the ‘House of the vigilante’. Then the hike begins up stairs and stone and dirt trails with maximum slopes of up to 30 degrees.

How to purchase my Machu Picchu + Mountain ticket?
After the changes that were made during 2024, the way to purchase tickets did not change significantly. So it is possible to purchase tickets virtually or in person at the offices in Cusco. In both ways you can find an availability of 200 daily tickets respectively. Similarly, as for the officialization of the high and regular season, you can find the same amount of tickets. One more fact is that you can only enter the Machu Picchu Mountain with this ticket.

How to ascend the Machu Picchu mountain?

  • The path to the top of the Machupicchu mountain is mainly made of stone stairs built by the Incas many years ago. These steps extend for approximately 2 kilometers.
  • It is not necessary to reach the top of the mountain to appreciate the geographical beauty of the place. Along the way there are some rest points with viewpoints from where you can already see the beautiful landscape of Machupicchu.
  • To reach the highest point, the stairs must be climbed at a pace appropriate to the physical condition of the visitor. Depending on the pace at which you ascend, you can reach the top in 1 or 2 hours.

Is the Machupicchu mountain dangerous?

  • This route is definitely not dangerous. There are no nearby ravines or narrow steps that can cause damage to the visitor. The entrance to this summit is allowed to people of all ages, including children and older adults.
  • At the top of the mountain there are security personnel who can help the tourist in case of an emergency . It is also recommended to take the necessary precautions during the walk. The whole route is very well signposted. The only danger is going outside the limits of the trails or looking for paths on your own.

Is the climb difficult?

  • The ascent to the top of the Machupicchu mountain is not easy. It is estimated to be of medium-moderate difficulty . You don’t need to be in top physical condition to do it. Along the way one meets children, young people and even older adults.
  • The Machupicchu mountain is 600 meters higher than the archaeological site, making the ascent difficult. In addition, if we take into account the altitude of this summit, the fatigue is even more intense.
  • However, if the visitor climbs the mountain at an adequate pace, they will have no problem reaching the top. The most important thing is the desire to want to reach the highest.

Which is more difficult the Machupicchu mountain or the Huayna Picchu?

  • Huaynapicchu Mountain is steeper than Machupicchu Mountain. However, its route is not so long. Therefore, the Machu Picchu mountain is considered more difficult than the Huayna Picchu.
  • Despite the steep trails and stairs near precipices; the Huayna Picchu mountain is preferred by tourists. The availability of the entrance ticket to Huaynapicchu ends before that of the Machupicchu mountain.
  • However, there are not many differences between the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains.

recommendations

  • Although the dry season (from March to October) presents less probabilities of rains, in these months the visitor can enjoy the mountain for himself, since fewer people walk his paths.
  • Carry your belongings in a backpack weighing no more than 5 kilos.
  • Do not risk your life by being on the edge of the roads. Follow the security measures.
  • If you do the ascent with children, make sure that they respect the mountain and obey the safety measures so that they are not exposed to any danger.
  • It is recommended to bring only what is necessary: rain poncho, hat, sunscreen, water, camera, snacks and your necessary documents.
  • To enjoy this incredible adventure you need the ticket ‘Machupicchu with Mountain’. Reserve your ticket in advance, especially if you want to visit in the high tourist season (April to August).

“A place with incredible views!“

“We did it the day after completing the trek and climbing to Huayna Picchu. This is much higher and obviously longer - the views are incredible. It took me a little over 1 hour to reach the summit. This hike is much less busy than Waynapicchu and we enjoyed it more because there were fewer people doing it.“

The Machu Picchu Mountain is the highest mountain and the one that covers practically the entire Inca site and construction. After the last changes in the ticket regulations, only people over 18 years old can access this trek. This measure was generally granted for all tickets that allow a tour outside the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. In this sense, in this blog, we want to answer: Who should choose the Machu Picchu with Mountain ticket? Let’s start!

Machu Picchu mountain
Machu Picchu mountain

What are the treks of Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu has numerous trekking opportunities; however, there are 2 of them that go all the way to the top of the mountains where Machu Picchu (the Inca city) is located. You will need a special Machu Picchu ticket to do any of these treks. At the same time, the other routes will connect with nearby destinations such as the Huchuy Picchu, which also has beautiful views or the hike to the Inti Punku, where you can see a panoramic view of Machu Picchu.

The other routes that can be done beyond Machu Picchu and having through hikes are the routes to the Inca Bridge of Machu Picchu and the hike to the Great Cavern or Temple of the Moon. This enclosure is located near the slopes of Huayna Picchu, so you have to make a downhill hike.

Returning to the subject of the hikes to the top of mountains we find that, one of the hikes is up Huayna Picchu mountain, the small mountain that is seen in the background of most photos of Machu Picchu, is one of the most sought-after hikes. There is so much demand for this hike that Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu tickets must be booked 4 months in advance. The other excursion takes place on the trails of Machu Picchu mountain (not to be confused with the Inca city of Machu Picchu). This mountain is higher and is located just in front of Huayna Picchu mountain. Below, more details of the treks near Machu Picchu.

Mountains and enclosures in Machu Picchu Approximate walking time (one way)
Machu Picchu Mountain 2 hours and 15 minutes
Huayna Picchu 1 hour and 30 minutes
Huchuy Picchu 45 minutes
Inca Bridge 30 minutes
Inti Punku 45 to 60 minutes
Great Cavern or Temple of the Moon 2 hours and 30 minutes

Who should choose the Machu Picchu mountain?

Machu Picchu Mountain is the mountain where the Inca city of Machu Picchu is built. The hike through it will take you along ancient Inca trails. The ascent is less steep and easier to do compared to the Huayna Picchu hike. So it is the best option for older adults who have a passion for hiking trails, also for groups of friends who want to have incredible views of the entire Machu Picchu region.

Another advantage of Machu Picchu mountain is that you do not have to climb to the top to get beautiful views of the Inca city or the entire geography in which it is located. So, if you do not feel physically fit enough to climb to the top of any of the mountains, this is ideal. In a short time, you will have beautiful views of Machu Picchu. After the first 20 minutes of the hike it is possible to appreciate the amazing views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains.

Not everyone can overcome the fear of heights to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain. If you suffer from vertigo, or do not feel very comfortable on trails next to cliffs with drops of hundreds of meters (as in the Huayna Picchu mountain), Machu Picchu mountain is undoubtedly the best option for the tour. This is because its trails are wider, making the hike easier and safer for everyone.

What to take to Machu Picchu Mountain?

  • It is important to do this tour with hiking shoes, otherwise have comfortable and resistant footwear.
  • Bring water, fruit and even snacks.
  • Don’t forget to use sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
  • Remember to wear comfortable clothing suitable for walking.

What ticket do I need to enter Machu Picchu mountain?

To hike this mountain you will need the Machu Picchu + Mountain Ticket. This is the only ticket that allows you access to climb to the top of the mountain. Although this ticket can be booked a few weeks in advance, it is advisable to make your reservation one or two months in advance. This is to guarantee your entrance at the time that best suits you.

In addition, this ticket only has a daily availability of 100 admission tickets that can be purchased online and another 100 in person. This availability will not vary during the high season and regular season. In this sense, the availability throughout the year will be 200 daily tickets. It is advisable to make reservations in advance to have easier access and availability to hotel services, trains, or more tours.

Details to consider about the mountains in Machu Picchu

As we saw in the table above, the destinations in question can only be visited with an independent entrance ticket. In other words, there are now 10 different tickets, 4 of which are only available during the high season. Now the high season officially starts every June 1st and runs until October 15th. Other tickets receive an increase in availability.

Likewise, once you have everything you need to get to Machu Picchu as entrance tickets, train reservations, bus, and even guidance. There are also some restrictions that Machu Picchu has for tourists. These restrictions serve more so that the entire site can be maintained in a sustainable way and also that the tour is harmonious throughout the site which for many is considered a sanctuary. Here are some of the prohibitions when visiting Machu Picchu.

  • Do not carry a large backpack or suitcases.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • Shoes with heels or similar are not allowed.
  • Making noise or carrying loudspeakers during the tour is strictly forbidden.
  • Altering the order during the tours.
  • Failure to respect the sections of the circuit, route or path that corresponds to the ticket purchased, may result in expulsion from the premises.
  • Make professional recordings without authorization or carry heavy equipment for the same.
  • Collect or save any waste you may generate during the tour.

Machu Picchu allows you to enjoy one of the most incredible natural landscapes in the world. It also offers hikes to the peaks of the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains. From both you can see the Inca Citadel from the top.

It is possible to hike short routes in Machu Picchu. Now, with the new updated entrances, you can find several alternatives that allow specific treks. That is, the new entrances have their own destination as can be seen in the entries. The entries that include treks are:

  • Ticket Machu Picchu + Mountain.
  • Ticket Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu.
  • Ticket Machu Picchu + Huchuy Picchu (High season only).
  • Ticket Machu Picchu + Inca Bridge (High season only).
  • Ticket Machu Picchu + Inti Punku (High season only).
  • Ticket Machu Picchu + Temple of the Moon (High season only).

The mountains of Machu Picchu

  • Approximately in 1450, the Incas built an urban, religious and resting place for the emperor Pachacutec and his family.
  • This important building was built as high as possible on a slope of the Machu Picchu mountain and at the foot of Huayna Picchu, another minor peak.
  • The result was the Wonder of the World, an enclosure that harmonizes with the surrounding nature.
  • Many things have changed since then. Now, the site is one of the largest tourist spots on the planet.
  • Nowadays, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain offer incredible adventures for the visitor.
Huayna Picchu
The steep Huayna Picchu Mountain, the most popular of Machu Picchu.

Huayna Picchu: the young mountain

  • Huayna Picchu is known as ‘the young mountain’. This is perhaps due to its smaller size compared to the imposing Machu Picchu.
  • It is located north of the Inca Citadel, 2,720 meters above sea level.
  • The Incas built vertiginous roads, viewpoints, and platforms on its slopes.
  • During the route to Huayna Picchu, there is a detour to the Temple of the Moon. Now this destination has its entrance.
  • Today the stone paths of Waynapicchu are one of the most popular tourist attractions for visitors.
  • At the top of Huayna Picchu you can appreciate all the scenic beauty of Machu Picchu.
  • This hike is considered one of the most incredible short hikes on the planet.
  • The ascent is arduous and extreme due to the scary ravines next to the Inca trails.
  • It takes on average 2 hours to climb up and down the mountain. Even so, it is still one of the favorite adventures for tourists.

Machu Picchu: the old mountain

  • Machu Picchu mountain is known as the ‘old mountain’ perhaps due to its larger size compared to Huayna Picchu.
  • It is located at the top of the Inca Citadel, at 3082 meters above sea level.
  • On its slopes, the Incas built roads in order to get as high as possible and thus worship the Andean gods: sun, mountains, moon.
  • Although no Inca temple was built on its paths, because of its height, the Machu Picchu mountain was one of the most important ‘apus’ in the area.
  • Today, the steep trails that lead to the top of the Machu Picchu mountain are one of the new tourist attractions of the place.
  • This trekking route covers almost 2 kilometers of steep trails.
  • Unlike Waynapicchu, the trails are wider and safer. Getting to the top and back takes an average of 3 to 4 hours depending on your physical condition.

Which Machu Picchu mountain is the best?

  • The hike to the top of Huayna Picchu is more intense but shorter. It can only be done by people over 18 years old.
  • The hike to the top of the Machu Picchu mountain is a longer and less intense route. Now, it can only be climbed by people over 18 years old.
  • From the top of both mountains and along the route, you can see and take beautiful pictures of Machu Picchu.
  • Both have beautiful views of the Inca site or wonder of the world.

It is important to check ticket availability
Although after the modifications and changes that were made in the tickets to Machu Picchu, it is not possible to find an increase of tickets during the high season. This, in both tickets. In this sense, it is very important to book in advance. There are cases in which the tickets for Huayna Picchu are sold out even trying to make the reservation 3 months in advance. The best recommendation we give is to make the reservation 4 months in advance in the best case. Only in this way, you will be able to organize your trip to Machu Picchu correctly.

Huayna Picchu Ticket

  • Reservations for the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ticket, allows the ascent of the Young Mountain.
  • It is the ticket with the highest demand, after the Classic Routes of Machu Picchu.
  • In regular season and high season there are only 300 tickets available for reservation via virtual or web page.
  • It is recommended to make the reservation 3 or 4 months in advance.
  • This ticket allows you to make a tour of the lower area of Machu Picchu.

There are two groups of times to enter Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu:

  • Group 1 – entrance to Machu Picchu from 7:00 a.m. / Entrance to Huayna Picchu from 8:00 a.m.
  • Group 2 – entrance to Machu Picchu from 9:00 a.m. / Entrance to Huayna Picchu from 10:00 a.m.

Machu Picchu Mountain Ticket

  • To get to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain you must purchase the Machu Picchu + Mountain ticket.
  • It is one of the best options in case you cannot buy the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ticket.
  • The daily limit of tickets for virtual sales is 100, both in regular and high season.
  • The entrance only allows the tour of the upper platforms of Machu Picchu.
  • It is possible to make the reservation months in advance. It is possible to make the reservation 1 or 2 weeks in advance.

There are two groups of times to enter Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu:

  • Group 1 – Entrance to Machu Picchu from 7:00 a.m. / Ascent to Machu Picchu mountain from 8:00 a.m.
  • Group 2 – Entrance to Machu Picchu from 9:00 a.m. / Ascent to Machu Picchu Mountain from 10:00 a.m.

The time of the hike in the mountains
Knowing the hiking time for both destinations is quite relative. Much will depend on the type of person and the physical condition he/she is in. The normal walking time, that is, at an adequate pace, to reach Machu Picchu Mountain, is only 2 hours. To reach the summit of Huayna Picchu, the time is less and can last only 1 hour.

Tips

The mountains of Machu Picchu are considered the adventure par excellence in the Wonder of the World. To enjoy them to the fullest, the following should be taken into consideration:

  • The Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ticket must be booked at least 3 months in advance.
  • The Machu Picchu + Mountain Ticket should be booked one or two weeks in advance.
  • Although it is not necessary to be an expert mountaineer, it is advisable to be in acceptable physical condition before the adventure.
  • Before doing either of the two treks, it is recommended to adapt to the altitude of Cusco. Two days of acclimatization will be enough.
  • The ascent to Machu Picchu and Waynapicchu is not a race for who gets there first. Walk at your own pace. There is plenty of time to complete the trek.
  • The mountain trails tend to get wet during the rainy season in Machu Picchu (November to March). It is recommended to wear sneakers or footwear suitable for hiking.
  • In both cases you are only allowed to carry a backpack weighing no more than 5 kilos. Carry only the most important things: sunscreen, water, sunglasses, hat or cap, rain poncho, camera and some snacks.

“Vertigo!!“

“The climb to Huayna Picchu is highly recommended on your visit to Machu Picchu. The slope to the top is not very large, just over 250 meters above Machu Picchu, but the path is vertical and not suitable if you are afraid of heights, it is vertigo! The views from the top are spectacular. You have to book the entrance in advance, as the entrance is limited to 400 people each day.“

That is why sometimes, it is recommended to the tourists to do previous training. It is important to know that even if it is not rainy season (December to March) it may rain. But, it will not have the same intensity as when it is rainy season since it will only be downpours.

During the rainy season, the road can be more slippery so the difficulty of the ascent increases. The best time to go

Machu Picchu Mountain is accessible all year round, but like Huayna Picchu Mountain, during the rainy season (November – April), there is a higher probability of heavy rains, making the trail slippery and more difficult to traverse. In this sense, an excellent option is to do the trek during the dry season (May – October). However, this period of time coincides with the high season, that is to say, with the dates in which the visits to Machu Picchu are massive and sometimes it is difficult to make a reservation for any ticket. Some dates are even sold out months in advance.

The region has a sub-tropical climate throughout the year, with daily temperatures averaging 18 °C (64 °F). During the dry season the humidity is around 40 to 45%, reaching 60 to 65% during the rainy season. All this causes some complications in the views. As, for example, the presence of fog to see Machu Picchu from the upper platform. However, it can not be a big problem when ascending in any of the schedules and the elapsed time lapse is very likely that the skies clear and you can find beautiful views, ideal for the postcard photo, at the conclusion of the tour of the Huayna Picchu Mountain.

Early trekking offers cooler temperatures and more shade. The dry season is undoubtedly the best time for trekking Machu Picchu mountain. However, it is also possible to do an excellent trek during the rainy season. For this, it will be essential to take some precautions such as waterproof shoes or poncho. The intense rains may seem an obstacle, but at the same time they allow a new experience when touring Machu Picchu.

Preparation and everything you need for the trek

The weather throughout the southern region of Peru is often unpredictable, with rain at any time of the year, so be prepared for rain or shine. The trail is mainly stone steps, so it is best to wear light, comfortable shoes. It is advisable to bring a light rain poncho and sun protection.

  • Water; minimum 1 to 1.5 liters of water (2 – 3 personal bottles).
  • Hat, sunglasses and sun protection.
  • Strong insect repellent.
  • Rain poncho.
  • Small snacks.
  • Identity Card / Passport / ISIC.
  • Printed Machu Picchu Electronic Ticket (without this you will not be able to enter Machu Picchu).
  • Camera.
